Objectives

  • The students will understand the process one goes through to get a good job. They will explore their own likes and dislikes to help them determine the kind of work for which they're best suited.
  • The students will be exposed to a variety of careers through guest speaker presentations. They will also understand what these people had to do to get their present positions.
  • The students will understand the laws related to employment of minors and we will review how a 14-16 year old can get their working papers.
  • The students will create a Qualification Brief that they will save to their personal district network folder where they can continue to update throughout their high school years. This will either show potential employers they are professional, dependable, honest and good team players, or it can be used to help fill out college/trade school applications.
  • Finally, the students will create a career portfolio that they can continue to update throughout their high school years, so they are prepared to fill out applications for jobs or college.

Procedure

Procedure for Day One

  1. After a brief overview of the unit (slide #7), show students the video (hyperlink on slide #8), "The World of Work; Getting a Good Job."
  2. After the video, students should complete a T-chart that contains at least 5 "likes" and "dislikes" (slide #9) to help them determine their areas of interest and then they should list two to three careers that could be associated with their lists of "likes". The things listed on slide #9 are examples of what they might write.

Procedure for Day Two

  1. Using slides #10-12 or the hyperlink on slide #13, discuss with students the laws governing the employment of minors.
  2. I typically discuss the potential earning for the students if they become employed and work the maximum hours per week.
  3. I hand out the applications for working papers and explain the procedure for acquiring their working papers to any interested student who is 14-16 years old.

Procedure for Day Three

  1. This is the presentation day for your guest speakers. (Refer to slide #2 for the planning of this.) It is recommended that you have refreshments for your guest speakers. It helps make them feel comfortable and welcome.
  2. I typically discuss the objective of the presentations with the presenters prior to the arrival of students. I obviously want them to describe their careers and the requirements needed to get that position, but I also want them to explain why it is important for the students to do well in school now. I also figure out how much time is allotted for each presenter and let them know I will signal them a few minutes before their time is up.

Procedure for Day Four

  1. Have copies of the Q-brief worksheet displayed on slide #14 in their binders, so they can use this as a reference. Explain the benefits of creating and updating the qualification brief throughout high school. It obviously helps them get a job, but it also helps students with college or trade school applications.
  2. Using the Q-brief worksheet, they should begin to write their own qualification brief using real examples of their lives. They should finish this for homework to be ready to use with the computers in the following lesson.

Procedure for Day Five and Six

  1. Students will use the computers in the lab to type their qualification brief. Our school has a network and each student has a user name and password to access their own folder. They should save their work in this folder so they can access and update throughout their high school career. If your school does not have the network, I recommend having students save the work on a disc, rewritable CD or flash drive. It is most valuable to them to be able to edit this document throughout high school.
  2. I have created a template that students can cut and paste in their own folders and edit to make their own. Step-by-step procedures are listed on slides #15-20. NOTE: The directions are specific for our school districts network. You can edit these to meet your own schools needs. I also teach inclusive classes, and the template is very helpful for my special education students. Some of my accelerated students like to create their own from using the resume templates on Microsoft Word.
  3. They should print out a hard copy of their qualification brief to place in their career portfolios.

Procedure for Day Seven

  1. Students should be given a copy of slide #22, a copy of the personal data worksheet and a folder, and then they should begin to compile all the information required for the career portfolio.
  2. You should have phone books available to get addresses of schools or businesses they may need.
  3. Using the list on slide #22, evaluate each student's portfolio and make any necessary changes on the qualification brief or any other requirements. I allow the students another date to resubmit a corrected portfolio for an improved grade. The goal is to have them perfect the work and keep it in a safe place at home so they can update it throughout their lives.

Assessment

The students will complete a portfolio which will be graded based upon the checklist on slide #22.
