Romeo and Juliet by ECSDM

Subject

English Language Arts (NYS P-12 Common Core)

Grade Levels

Commencement, 9th Grade

Description

The purpose of this lesson is to help students with special needs learn the characters in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and understand the familial relationships that connect them.

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to identify and organize characters from Romeo and Juliet, according to their family relationships.
2. Students will describe the characteristics of the two main characters, Romeo and Juliet.

Target Audience

This lesson is intended to be used with a ninth and tenth grade mixed class of Special Education students who are functioning academically below third grade in Language Arts. It can be modified and adapted to be used with students on grade level, but at a faster pace and with greater content included.

Support Materials

  • SMART Board, computer, and projector
  • Scope English Level 3 Anthology Scholastic Inc. 1988
  • Romeo and Juliet SMART Board lesson (also available in PDF format)
  • Inspiration Software

  • Procedure

    1. Students will be presented with slide #1.

    2. Using the SMART Board (or projector with white/black board), students will come up one at a time to match any character of choice to the character's description.

    3. Continue this activity until all characters and descriptions are properly matched.

    4. Utilizing slide #2, students will move characters and organize them into the proper categories. The characters will be categorized into the following groups: Montague household, Capulet household, church member and government member.

    5. As a class, students will verbally describe the two main characters, Romeo and Juliet. Using Inspiration, the class will create individual character webs for both Romeo and Juliet. The teacher will insert the responses provided by the students. The end result will be two character webs that will be distributed to each student. (The teacher should be familiar with creating a web using Inspiration prior to creating one with the class.)

    Assessment

The teacher will informally assess students throughout the lesson. Student understanding will be evaluated based on students' ability to match characters' name with characters' descriptions. Students' ability to identify and classify characters according to family House (Montague or Capulet) will also be assessed.
