• Growth of New York During Early Colonial Period

Description

Historic Background:
In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed across the Atlantic Ocean from Europe and landed in America. When news of his voyage reached Europe other explorers followed. Countries in Europe wanted to control the natural resources of North America.

By the 1600s, the French, British, and Dutch had explored the Atlantic Coast of what is now the United States. The colonists had to overcome many challenges to start a new life and new colonies.

Task:
For Part A, read each document carefully and answer the question or questions after each document. Then read the directions for Part B and write your essay.

For Part B, use your answers from Part A, information from the documents, and your knowledge of social studies to write a well organized essay. In the essay you should tell:

What influenced the growth of New York during the early colonial period?

SS.4.3 COLONIAL AND REVOLUTIONARY PERIOD IN NEW YORK: European exploration led to the colonization of the region that became New York State. Beginning in the early 1600s, colonial New York was home to people from many different countries. Colonial New York was important during the Revolutionary Period.

SS.4.3.b Colonial New York became home to many different peoples including European immigrants, and free and enslaved Africans. Colonists developed different lifestyles.

SS.7.2 COLONIAL DEVELOPMENTS: European exploration of the New World resulted in various interactions with Native Americans and in colonization. The American colonies were established for a variety of reasons and developed differently based on economic, social, and geographic factors. Colonial America had a variety of social structures under which not all people were treated equally.

SS.7.2.c.1 Students will investigate the reasons for colonization and the role of geography in the development of each colonial region.
