Historic Background:
The role of women has changed greatly since colonial times. Women did not receive the same treatment and opportunities as men.

Task:
For Part A, read each document carefully and answer the question or questions after each document. Then read the directions for Part B and write your essay.

For Part B, use your answers from Part A, information from the documents, and your knowledge of social studies to write a well organized essay. In the essay you should:

Tell how the role of women has changed since colonial times.

SS.4.5.b Women have not always had the same rights as men in the United States and New York State. They sought to expand their rights and bring about change.

SS.4.5.b.1 Students will examine the rights denied to women during the 1800s.

SS.4.5.b.2 Students will investigate people who took action to bring about change such as Amelia Bloomer, Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Susan B. Anthony, Matilda Joslyn Gage, and Elizabeth Blackwell. Students will explore what happened at the convention of women in Seneca Falls.
