Assessment
My Setting Book Rubric to assess Setting Book
Learning Context/ Introduction
In this lesson, students will learn what setting is and how it is determined in a story. This lesson is appropriate for grade level 1.
Duration
4 hours/one week
Essential Question
What is the setting of the story?
Where does the story take place?
When does the story take place?
Instructional/Environment Modifications
One-on-One help, aide for students who need help reading names of stamps in KidWorks program. The program will also tell what the stamp is as they choose it.
Read books in small groups and do the activities in small groups.
This lesson covers all of the different learning styles (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic).
Procedure
Present the beginning part of the PowerPoint Presentation. (Where?) The students will tell where they are after seeing the picture come up on the screen. Discuss each place as a possible setting of a story.
Have students fold a piece of white paper in half and then in half again so there are four boxes.
Read the book Friends by Helme Heime. Stop often to ask, "Where are the friends now?" The students will draw a picture of where the friends are in one box. Continue to do this 3 times.
Students will create their own setting book of Where, using KidWorks. They will search for pictures of places and paste them in their book. The students will label each picture. KidWorks is a pre-k-3rd grade Word Processing program with graphics and voice.
Present the second part of the PowerPoint Presentation. (When?) Discuss each picture as a possible time the story is happening.
Have students fold a piece of white paper in half and in half again so there are four boxes. Read the book Me Too by Mercer Mayer stop to ask, "When is the story taking place?"
Find the correct picture. Cut and paste the correct picture in the box for the correct setting in the story. Students will make inferences to make the appropriate choice. (teacher created pictures from the story)
Students will complete their setting book, in KidWorks, by adding when a story could happen. They will search for pictures of when a story could take place and paste and label them in their book.
Print their completed Book of Setting. Keep their books to refer to during Guided Reading Groups. They will keep them in their book boxes.

Reflections and Feedback
Prior computer skills are needed before you ask them to use KidWorks program. Prior modeling of the KidWorks program using my smart board would have made it easier. I will have this advantage when I teach this next year. I would like to find a better book that has more seasons in it to show "when."
To compliment a learning experience done last year by one of my co-workers, I created a game that included character and setting. This game is a culminating experience that includes both learning experiences. Her learning experience was on character and it was submitted last year. Another team member is going next year and we hope to continue to build on our experiences. We hope to have a unit on story elements.
