Learning Context/ Introduction

Prevention of HIV infection is a top priority. Teenagers are becoming infected - not only by sexual contact but also through tattooing and other "dirty" needles. It demands more than just knowing about safe sex and clean needles, but an understanding of all three components of HIV infection: the HIV virus, the transmitter, and the recipient. One can avoid HIV infection by controlling any one of the three aspects of HIV transmission. This project is designed for students to think about all the different ways that they can protect themselves.

Prevent HIV Infection

In the first activity, the students are asked for their ideas on transmission of acne, athlete's foot, and AIDS. Students will be asked to think about how individuals become infected with these diseases and to speculate on the transmissibility of acne, athlete's foot, and AIDS.

In the second activity, the students will be presented with evidence on HIV infection. They will look at the three components of HIV infection and think about the part that each of these components plays in HIV transmission. In the third activity, the students will propose ways that the individuals infected with HIV through sexual transmission, mother to baby transmission, and direct transmission could have been protected.
