Assessment
Students will answer classroom questions and their individual responses are sent immediately, effortlessly, and seamlessly into the Gradebook where they are weighted, analyzed with a grading curve, and much more. Once the data is collected, either corporately or individually, the results are available immediately to the teacher. Tedious grading is virtually eliminated and the teacher has access to individual, class, and standards reports.
Learning Context/ Introduction
This is an end of the year activity that I used to prepare students for the Global History and Geography Regents. This lesson could be used in both Global History I or II, or it could be used in any World History course.
Duration
Two-Three 45-minute class periods for a review of the learning points to be assessed.
One 45-minute class period of the game using the CPS.
Procedure
- The teacher divides the class into four groups of four students, and distributes a hard-copy of 30 objective questions to each group.
- Each question has a set value and a bonus value. Prior to the game, I input a key for the game providing the correct answer for each question.
- The teacher initiates each round of the game. CPS will randomly select a question number from the 30 questions and assign that question to a team. Each team will immediately identify that numbered question from their hardcopy of the questions, process that question and respond with their answer. When all the teams have provided an answer, the teacher will end the round and the scores will be shown.
- Of course, teams that missed the question will not receive any points. The teams that get the correct answer will receive the point value for correct answers. The first team to get the correct answer to their question, on their first attempt, will receive the bonus points.
- The game proceeds on that basis until a predetermined number of rounds have been completed. If there is a tie, then a sudden death can proceed to determine a winning team.
Reflections and Feedback
This activity integrates fun, competition, teamwork, repetition, retrieval, spacing, and delayed feedback into the learning environment. The questions were focused on the learning points of the previous 2-3 review days. The CPS allowed my students to respond to objective questions without feeling the threat of being incorrect in front of their peers. For those students that missed quite a few of the questions, I was able to print a study guide from the CPS to help those students in their weak areas. Technology that engages my students, provides me with quick and valuable evaluations, and allows me to spend more time with my students is precisely the type of technology I need in my classroom!!
