Lesson Plan

Endocrine Man
Course, Subject
Biology/Living Environment, Math, Science & Technology, Science (NYS P-12)
Grade Levels
Intermediate, Commencement, 7th Grade, 8th Grade, 9th Grade, 10th Grade
Duration
40-45 minute class period
Materials
- Posterboard and/or construction paper
- Markers and/or colored pencils
- Books with an endocrine system diagram
Objectives
- Students will learn the parts (glands) of the endocrine system and be able to label the parts if presented with a quiz.
- Students will be able to match certain hormones that come from the glands that they label on the endocrine system.
Description
This lesson is designed to get the students moving and learning about the parts of the endocrine system. This lesson can be used as an introductory to the parts of the endocrine system, or as a lesson following notes on the endocrine system. This should be a fun way for the students to become familiar with the parts of the endocrine system.
Procedure
- Begin class with an introduction to the endocrine system or a review of the endocrine system (if you have started teaching it).
- Explain to the students that they are going to make an Endocrine Man today. (You should already have a sample one constructed. It does not have to be complete but should provide a general idea for the students).
- Have the students open to a page in their books that has a labeled diagram of the endocrine system.
- Tell students they can work with 1-2 other students, depending on class size, on this assignment.
- Explain to the students that in their groups, they are going to draw and label an Endocrine Man. They are to draw an outline of a body, and then draw and label the glands of the endocrine system inside their body. They may use markers, colored pencils, poster board, or construction paper.
- The students can give the Endocrine Man a name, hair, shoes, and gloves if they would like.
- Have the students get their materials and begin their assignment.
- With time left in class, you can have some of the students come up to the front of the room and show the other students their poster. Have these students point out the different parts of the Endocrine System.
- You can have the students hang up their posters around the room or in the hallway.
Note:
- The students should label the hypothalamus, pituitary, adrenal medulla, thyroid, parathyroid, testes, ovaries, and pancreas.
- You may want to write the parts of the endocrine system on the board or overhead that you want the students to label.
Assessment
You can have each group come to the front of the room and show the rest of the class their poster. Have each group point out a specific gland and have them explain a hormone that is produced from this gland.
The next class period, you can present your students with a pop-quiz. Have a sheet of paper with just an outline of a body and have the student label the parts of the endocrine system while giving you an example of a hormone produced from each gland.
