Focus Group

First-Third Grade

Objective

*Students will participate in the construction of a group poem using the antonyms night and day, teacher and student, or window and wall, to practice constructing a Diamante poem

*Students will author and illustrate their own Diamante Poem

Procedure/Activities

Prior to beginning this lesson, students will need to have a command of the parts of speech. It is helpful to review nouns as naming words, verbs as action or "ing" words, and adjectives as describing words.

  1. As a whole group, choose which set of antonyms you will write about.
  2. Brainstorm and record a list of adjectives, verbs, and synonyms for each of the antonyms you are using.
  3. Choose the words you will use to complete the Diamante poem. Ask the students to pay special attention to words that might help to paint a better mental picture for the reader. For example: If the chosen antonyms are "winter" and "summer," verbs like "sledding" and "swimming" are far better than "playing" and "reading" even though they are activities that might also take place during these seasons.
  4. Demonstrate or discuss appropriate illustrations for the poem that the class has written.
  5. Ask students to think of two nouns that are antonyms to use for their own Diamante poem.
  6. Provide the writing template to the students(see support materials below).
  7. Instruct the students to think of at least 5 adjectives and verbs for each noun/antonym they are writing about.
  8. Students will choose some of the words to complete the Diamante.
  9. Students will illustrate their poems.
  10. Description

This lesson provides students with practice using parts of speech such as nouns, adjectives, and verbs, while also enabling them to author a poem on a topic or concept they are studying.
