3. What website could you go to find out what the weather will be like tomorrow?

4. What are some books and websites that feature information about weather?

After the lesson has come to a close, the instructor will complete a class assessment through a rubric.

Introduction

Students will learn about resources relating to weather and hurricanes. This learning experience will coincide with their science unit on weather. This lesson will cover information literacy standard number 6, which states that the student who is an independent learner is information literate and strives for excellence in information seeking and knowledge generation.

Duration

Planning will take place 2 weeks prior to the learning experience and will take approximately 1 hour. During this time, the teacher and school library media specialist will create a rubric for student assessment.

Time of implementation will take 1-2 class periods (each class period will last approximately 30-40 minutes).

Assessment will take place after the learning experience has been completed. The rubric will be used to assess student comprehension.

Essential Question

What are some resources that can be used to find out more about weather?

Instructional/Environment Modifications

A space must be provided that is large enough to accommodate a class of about 25 students. Modifications must also be made so that there is a computer and projector present in the instructional area.

This lesson covers all of the different learning styles (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic), through explanations, visual aids, and student interactions with instruments and materials.

Procedure

1. Students will listen to the story "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs".

2. Students will be shown highlights from non fiction books on weather.

3. Students will be shown additional weather related resources such as a children's almanac and weather.com.

4. Students will be shown instruments used to measure weather (thermometer, barometer, weather vane, hygrometer, etc.).

5. Students will be asked about which items they would use to find answers about specific weather questions.

During the time of this learning experience, the students will be doing a unit of study on weather with their classroom teacher. This lesson will be presenting them with valuable resources to supplement their weather unit.

Reflections and Feedback

After the learning experience has been completed, the teacher and media specialist will meet and discuss the students' response to the lesson. The students' level of engagement and comprehension will be the basis for changes in the learning experience.
