Writing a Research Paper

Follow these steps:

1.Decide on a topic.

2.Plan a rough outline of your research paper.

3.Look through books and other materials to see what information is available on your subject.

4.Read helpful material and take clear, accurate notes. Try to write notes in short phrases of your own words so you won’t “sound like the book” when you write your report. You can use some of the book’s words but don’t copy sentences unless you use quotation marks and credit the author.

5.Write and underline subtopic or “slug” at the top of each note card.

6.Write the final outline for your paper.

7.Read and take more notes on any weak areas.

8.Write your first draft.

9.Revise your first draft – conference with partner and a friend

10.Organize bibliography alphabetically.

11.Proofread again.

12. Turn in your report and note cards.

13.Smile – you are all done with the written part of your report.

Plan a Rough Outline

The rough outline is a guide for you to use in your research and note taking. As you do more research, you may add to or take away from your outline. Sometimes you can’t find enough information on one subtopic or you decide you like some other subtopic better in your report. Then you change this working outline to show the subtopics you are going to write about.

Examples:

Egyptian Pyramids

I.Introduction

II.Why were pyramids build?

III.How were the pyramids made?

IV.What was it like inside a pyramid?

V.What were some famous pyramids?

VI.Conclusion

Daily Life of the Ancient Roman People

I.Introduction

II.Homes

III.Jobs

IV.Dress

V.Entertainment

VI.Conclusion

Note Cards

On 3x5 or 4x6 cards take notes on the material you read. Each note card will have only information on one specific topic. Every time you record information on a different topic, you must use a new note card with a new “slug” or subtopic. The information you take from you research must be rewritten in your own words or quoted.

This number matches your bibliography card source number.

Bibliography

Title your Bibliography page on the top line.

Arrange your entries in alphabetical order. Do not count the words “A,” “An,” or “The” when putting them in alphabetical order.

There are sample entries on the sheets we used from the library.

Leave a space between each entry.

The first word starts at the red line. Go on across the page to the other red line. When you drop to the second line, indent 5 spaces.

Put a period between each part.

Final copy need to be in blue or black ink or typed.

Sample of a book entry:

Author (last name first then first name). Title (underlined). Place of

Publication (city): Publishing Company. Copyright date. Pages used.
