Parent/Child Activity: Setting the Stage
Purpose: Children will find motivation and assurance in routines for study in home.

Take a few minutes with your child to …

Talk with your child about the need for regular study time in a functional, comfortable study place at home.

Help your child find the best place at home for study. Ask your child to draw a picture of the location; for example, a desk in a bedroom, a nook in the kitchen, a spot set aside in the attic or basement.

Ask your child to list all the items he or she might need for successful completion of homework assignments. Suggest any other items your child might not list; for example, a clock, a dictionary, a stapler. Help to gather these items for your child's use.

Using the picture of the home study place your child has drawn as the upper half, help your child make a homework calendar. Use either a pre-printed calendar for the bottom half or draw a calendar, month-by-month, for the bottom half.

Teach your child strategies for completing his homework.
  • Provide an assignment notebook, and show your child how to write down assigned homework.
  • Tell your child to listen carefully to each assignment.
  • Every day, ask your child what homework has been assigned.
  • Explain to your child that it is very important to understand each assignment. Urge your child to ask the teacher questions. Practice, pretending that you are the teacher. Ask your child to practice an opening statement, such as '' Teacher's Name , will you please tell me again what to do for homework?'' Tell your child there is no need to feel embarassed to ask for help. (You may wish to explain to the teacher by note, phone, or meeting that you have urged your child to ask questions.)
  • Put a star on this homework calendar for each homework assignment your child completes.
