Parent/Child Activity: The Gift of Giving
Purpose: At this time of year, we often think about giving to others. We can help our children understand the importance of thinking of others within our families and communities. Children often think of themselves first and receiving gifts. We can help them explore ways they can give of themselves to others.

Take a few minutes with your child to …

Talk with your child about why we give gifts to others. Think back to gifts he/she has received and given.

Together, think about things you could give others that don't cost much money. For example: a picture your child draws, a hug, baked goods, doing other's chores, shoveling a neighbor's driveway, etc.

Choose a friend or relative to whom your child would like to give a gift. Make a ''Gift Certificate'' for this person.
  1. Cut out a square piece of paper.
  2. Choose something helpful to do for that person.
  3. Write it on the certificate.
  4. Decorate the certificate.
  5. Wrap the certificate and give it to the person!
