Description

Students will be introduced to the Hero Cycle, the term epic poetry, vocabulary from The Odyssey, and begin reading Part 1 of the epic.

Duration

One 80-minute class period

Objectives

  • Students will create a Mind Map and record important literary elements/devices, characters, and events from the text.
  • Students will create visual images to help remember vocabulary terms.
  • Students will understand the quest cycle and how it relates to Odysseus.
  • Students will read and discuss Part 1 of The Odyssey.

Essential Question(s)

  • Why is it important for people and cultures to construct narratives about their experience?
  • What is the role of a hero in a culture?
  • How are belief systems represented and reproduced through history, literature,and art?
  • To what extent do belief systems shape and/or reflect culture and society?
  • How do our values and beliefs shape who we are as individuals and influence our behavior?

    • The Odyssey - we used our textbook by McGraw-Hill- Glencoe Literature Course 4- for excerpts from the epic
    • 11 x 17 paper for Mind Maps
    • Markers and Colored Pencils for creating Mind Maps
    • Vocabulary Handout (one per student)

  • Step-by-Step Procedure

    Anticipatory Set: Students will write down three things they remember about the Trojan War, mythology, and/or Homer from last class.

    1. Review what students wrote down and discuss as a class.
    2. Teacher will guide students in creating Mind Map to be used while reading. Focus on the definition of Epic and how it differs from other poetry. (See attached examples.)
    3. Teacher will pass out vocabulary words for the unit. Students will be asked to review the words and definitions and create a sketch/visual image to help them remember the meanings of the words for Part 1.
    4. Teacher will discuss the Hero Cycle for Odysseus (see handout).
    5. Read Part 1. Pause to review main events and characters.
    6. Record information and examples from the text on Mind Map from Part 1.

    Closure: Students will write a sentence (or more than one sentence) using two vocabulary words from Part 1 to summarize what we read today.

    • Student participation in discussion and reading Part 1
    • Accuracy of student sentences (Closure activity)
