Lesson Plan

Similes and Metaphors: An Interactive Review by ECSDM

Subject

English Language Arts (2005), English Language Arts (NYS P-12 Common Core)

Grade Levels

Intermediate, 7th Grade, 8th Grade

Duration

Two 45-minute class periods

Materials

  • SMART Board Presentation (attached)
  • Tupac poems (attached)
  • Sentence strips
  • Rubric for grading simile and metaphors

Step-by-Step Procedure

Day 1

  1. Prior to beginning the lesson, a pre-assessment should be given to find out how much students know about poetic elements. This could be a simple semantic web done with the entire class with the poetic elements that they know or remember. Then, the teacher will introduce the review of similes and metaphors with the goal being for students to recognize them in poetry and use them in their own writing or poetry.
  2. The teacher should then use the SMART Board presentation to go through the definitions with students by starting with the BrainPop attached in the SMART Board presentation. Then the presentation will use several different activities of practicing with both simile and metaphor and ultimately review both of them together.
  3. The students should be interacting with the SMART Board and creating their own similes and metaphors within the presentation.

Day 2

  1. The teacher should begin with a quick review of the previous day's lesson.
  2. Then, the teacher should have students break into pairs to create two similes and two metaphors and write them onto sentence strips. (If competition is an extrinsic motivator, have the students vote on their favorite at the end.)
  3. Next, start with one of the poems provided and have students read it for simile and metaphor as a whole class. From that point, they can answer the question about the main idea because the metaphor will lead them to the answer.
  4. Have students work again with a partner to do the same with the other poem.
  5. Have students write an exit card or reflection about what they learned today. Have them make sure they comment on similes, metaphors, metaphors in poetry, main idea and the connections between all of them. This could also be done in the form of a discussion.

Description

This lesson is designed to review similes and metaphors within a poetry unit. Students will be able to identify the difference between a simile and a metaphor and interact with the SMART Board presentation at the same time. Students will then be able to create their own similes and metaphors in their own writing. The continuation of the lesson will be working with students on identifying similes and metaphors in two poems written by Tupac Shakur.
