Music - Jazz Band - Matrix 2 - Grade 9-12 - 10 - 40 Weeks

1. Student will express him/herself in musical terms appropriate to the instrument of study and music being performed



2. Students will demonstrate literacy with musical notation used in jazz performance







3. Students will perform music written for jazz ensemble by composers from America and around the world








4. Students will perform in concerts sponsored by the Music Department during the academic school year


5. Students will make affective judgments about different types, styles and genres of jazz music








6. Students will demonstrate skills in jazz improvisation







7. Students will demonstrate sight-reading skills on his/her instrument using jazz ensemble music

Ensemble Music
1.1 Student will define terms as encountered in assigned ensemble music
1.2 Students will label terms of expression, tempo and dynamics from given example


2.1 Students will perform jazz music using correct pitch, rhythm and articulation
2.2 Students will perform jazz music consistent with notated expression, dynamic and tempo markings


3.1 Students will rehearse and perform music for jazz ensemble by American composers
3.2 Students will rehearse and perform music for jazz ensemble by composers of global significance
3.3 Students will rehearse and perform transcriptions of well-known jazz works of historical significance 


4.1 Students will experience performance in a concert environment



5.1 Students will rehearse and perform a wide variety of jazz-related music (swing, ballad, fusion, rock, waltz, shuffle)

5.2 Students will make commentary on favorite types of jazz ensemble music


6.1 Students will perform blues scales in at least 7 keys
6.2 Students will perform patterns based on chord progressions

6.3 Students will perform an improvised solo with the jazz ensemble in performance
