Connecting Instructional Analysis with NYLearns.org Resources

The Center for Applied Technologies in Education (CATE) is one of several partners working with the Education Innovation Consortium (EIC) to help educators use high stakes assessment data to improve instruction in the classroom. Leadership teams from six Buffalo Public Schools are participating in a pilot project to provide hands-on knowledge and skill development in three areas that research indicates are tied to school improvement: team work and group process skills; using data to inform instruction; and high-quality educational resources targeting student needs. The staff from CATE and the Western Regional School Support Center (RSCC), located at Erie I BOCES, used student performance data from the data warehouse to develop crosswalks at the performance indicator level tailored to the school's performance objectives.

New Features on the Way!

We are getting closer to rolling out our new and improved tools in the registered environment of NYLearns.org. Among the enhancements will be an easy-to-use webpage builder which educators can use to communicate with their students and parents. The webpage builder will include the ability for teachers to post homework assignments as well as important announcements.

NYLearns.org @ ThinkBright Summer Digital Institute

In partnership with WNED, Erie 1 BOCES, and the Buffalo Public Schools, UB's Center for Applied Technologies in Education will be presenting at the 2nd annual ThinkBright Summer Digital Institute. In support of NCLB's requirements that districts use scientifically proven methods to raise student performance, this year's theme is "New Technologies, New Literacies: Digital Resources for the Classroom."

Additions to the Assessment Builder

As mandated by No Child Left Behind, states that receive federal funding for education must test students in reading and math every year. Beginning in 2006, New York will administer state-wide Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) assessments to students in Grades 3 - 8. These yearly assessments provide an opportunity to do the following:
  • Evaluate the implementation of the revised learning standards

  • Measure student progress

  • Gather information about student readiness for study at the next level

  • Determine whether schools and districts are making adequate yearly progress

The Deformed Frogs Mystery!

Now you can visit NYLearns.org to access the Web-based Inquiry Science Environment (WISE) - a free on-line science learning environment for students in grades 4-12, supported by the National Science Foundation. In WISE, students work on exciting inquiry projects on topics such as genetically modified foods, earthquake prediction, and the deformed frogs' mystery. Students learn about and respond to contemporary scientific controversies through designing, debating, and critiquing solutions.
