Students will use an online calculator to determine their Body Mass Index (BMI).

Description

Working individually, students will find out what their BMI is and if they fall into the normal, overweight, or obese range.

This lesson is one part of a larger unit, Health. While completing this unit, students will learn about how to manage their nutrition, weight, and exercise to live a healthy lifestyle.

Materials

Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. Ask the class what is meant by the term BMI? What does it mean? How does your BMI relate to your overall health?
  2. Review BMI with the class.
  3. Hand out the Calculate your BMI worksheet to students.
  4. Demonstrate how to calculate your BMI for the class using the CDC tool.
  5. Give students access to a computer connected to the Internet or hand out copies of the Body Mass Index table.
  6. Ask students to answer the questions on the worksheet.
  7. Discuss with the class what they can do to maintain or change their weight. Discuss healthy eating habits and exercise.
  8. Have students write down one thing they learned from the activity and one thing they will do regarding their eating habits and exercise on the back of the worksheet. Students should turn this in as an exit slip on their way out of class.
